Whether you’re a first time visitor to New York City or a local resident, there’s one mind-blowing way to experience the city from a whole new perspective. In my opinion, the most instagrammable way to capture iconic NYC is to do it via helicopter, without any doors, taking flight over some of the most icon spots in Manhattan. Join us on our epic NYC Helicopter Experience.
When I was in the city with my friend Fredrik who was visiting from Norway (we were filming another project down in the Dominican Republic the week prior), it didn’t take much to convince me to hop onboard with this idea. We went up on a 15 minute flight with Fly Nyon over in Kearny, NJ. We got really lucky because two people on our flight cancelled so we got more time in the air since they typically do fly-by’s of the iconic NY things so both sides of the helicopter can get the shot they want.
Making shortlist of what we wanted to shoot ahead was essential in maximizing our time up in the air – I focused on stills and Fredrik on capturing video footage.
If you want the ability for stable video footage, you want to choose the front seat. The amount of wind in the back or middle seat makes it much harder to capture.
If you want that epic shoe selfie, pick the middle seat. You get to unbuckle yourself and dangle out further over the ledge (still fully strapped on from the back) giving you the most room to take pictures without any element of the helicopter in the way.
Check out the awesome video Fredrik put together below.
When you fly with FlyNYON like we did, you can bring up as much gear as you want to since they can attach it all to you. I brought my iPhone and canon 5d mark 4. Fredrik brought his Lumix GH5, iPhone, and we attached my Go Pro Hero 5 to him as well for some wide angle selfies.
I’m constantly getting messages/emails asking where I buy my travel gear from.
When they have what I’m looking for, which is 99% of the time, I buy my photography and film equipment from B + H photo.
It’s a site my mentor introduced me to when I was first starting out in film six years ago. They have incredible customer service and I trust their team to always know all of the answers to questions I have.
Whenever I take a trip to the city, I always pop into the B + H store because I can get hands on and try out new gear, lenses, and ask questions. Highly recommend a visit if you haven’t been before!
I like to describe the giant space as Santa’s workshop for electronics. You’ll see what I mean when you arrive. And if you’re a tech geek like me, I promise your first visit won’t be your last.
What kind of camera do you use to take pictures? Let me know in the comments below. I’m always looking for new things to try.
