The Purple Pig – Octopus

Born and raised in Southern Illinois, I look forward to heading up to Chicago each time I’m in route to see my family for holidays. My last solo visit, I hopped on the train (read 7 reasons you should travel by train in 2015 here) for a one night taste of Chicago’s River North Neighborhood. Here are a few suggestions for the next time you make your own journey on a whim.

The Bohemian: Bone Marrow + Steak Tartare

I always end my visit on a favorite note, so I’d like to begin by telling you about the Purple Pig. It’s my Chicago city staple. Their – obscene in a good way – by the glass wine list never disappoints when you’re looking for a variation in your experience. Pair one with an assortment of meats and cheeses, the octopus, and the razor clams followed by something -anything- dolce. Do not miss this place. I repeat. Do not miss this place. Ok. Next…

Infused Fashion

The Bohemian House menu boasts Central European cuisine influences. Get a mouthful of cocktail flavor and try the ‘Infused Fashion’: House Made Vanilla Fig Bourbon and Orange. The Bone Marrow and Steak Tartare was also quite a rich treat.

Beatrix- Bulletproof Coffee

The Beatrix Coffee Bar has some of the most talked about beans around town. Ladies: put your lipgloss away. And no need for Chapstick on a blustery day. You’ll get all the moisture you need from a Bulletproof Coffee at Beatrix: unsalted grass fed butter, mtc oil (coconut oil extract), and super low toxicity beans in a mug. Not up for this crazy concoction? They’re classic latte’s are just as good.

Take a seat at the Frontera Grill. This Rick Bayless restaurant is always on a wait – and for good reason- past dusk, so snag a seat while the sun is high, sit and savor the vibrant ceviches.

off the beaten path travel

Hotel Felix

When you’re packing it all in and won’t be spending to much time in a room, Hotel Felix fits just right. Centrally located and easily walkable from any of the above restaurants, this comfortable modern eco-boutique hotel is the perfect place to rest your head.

If you’ve never been to the windy city, grabbing a Citypass is an excellent way to see a few of those iconic sites and museums at a discounted price. From the epic views looking down from the Sky Deck to Chicago’s Art Institute, pick five of the seven things offered see/do and cross a few more things off your bucket list.
